The Spaces Between Your Fingers

My brother and his wife have been together for about eight years, and have one of the most amazing relationships I know. Their love is pure and complete, and no matter what trial or tribulation they experience, they face it together.

This makes the fact that their relationship essentially was the result of a dare all the more entertaining. Our cousin and his girlfriend had contacted Tony about Amanda's boyfriend, telling him how terrible he was ( a consensus reached by almost everyone other than the boy's mother). They asked Tony to try his best to get Amanda to break up with him and, my brother never being one to pass up a challenge, agreed. It took time, but eventually Amanda agreed to meet with him.

The sounds of pins crashing, bowling balls rolling, and beeping arcade machines surrounded him as he stared at his phone. His eyes traced the single line over and over again, making his leg bounce with nervous anticipation.

Amanda: On my way now :)

He’d been trying to get her to say yes for days. First the movies, then golf, then pizza. Over and over again she came up with reason why she couldn’t go. Still, despite that they continued to talk. Maybe that was why she finally said yes today. All that talking had finally whittled her down, convinced her to give him a shot.

He heard his father let out a victorious shot from across the alley as the pins of his lane went flying; another strike. Tony’s eyes gravitated from his father’s celebrations to the opened door of the bowling alley, in which stood a girl with long, dark blond hair. He looked at her, thinking to himself how cute the girl was.

His memories jumped back to when he had asked his cousin Zach what to expect of Amanda. Zach had pulled up a picture of a woman roughly the weight of five obese elephants.

“That looks about right.” Zach had said.

Tony compared the image in his head to the girl at the door. Nope. Not even close. He said to himself as the girl pulled a phone from her pocket.

Bzz Bzz his phone rumbled from his pocket.

“There’s no way.” He whispered, pulling the device from his pocket. The screen lit up.

One new message from Amanda.

His eyes jumped from the phone to the door, where the girl stood, scanning the room, shifting her weight nervously. He tapped the screen, the message opening as he did.

Amanda: Hey, I’m here. Standing at the door.

His fingers flew over the keyboard, barely conscious of what they were saying as he thought to himself Holy shit she’s actually cute.

Me: I’m over in the arcade.

The girl at the door looked down at her phone, eyes popping up to where he sat. He smiled, raising his hand to wave at her.
