This is about my mom graduating from the University of Minnesota for her undergraduate years. She didn't fall all the way dow, just stumbled more-so, but I wanted to really take this story and run with it and really dramatize it. She was still super embarrassed about majorly tripping and in front of her university’s present, though.

“Becky Haywood...Linda Herd…Benjamin Higgins…”

Gulp. I’m next… Wendy thought to herself, mentally preparing for the moment in the spotlight she had coming.

Today was the day of Wendy’s college graduation. She had been working hard at the University of Minnesota for four long years in the field of human resources, and it’s been an uphill battle. The endless final exams, the non-stop all-nighters, the piles on piles of homework. Not to mention her unhealthy caffeine consumption and pizza diet. It seemed like she’d been in college forever and that the stress would never end, but tonight it does. All the stress and all-nighters have been worth it, and they have only lead up to this very moment.

Wendy’s eyes widened as she saw the usher point to her row. She exchanged a panicked look with her classmate, and begrudgingly got up. She timidly walked with the rest of her row up to the stage, towards both the announcer and president who were handing out the student’s degrees.

The only thing that was going through her head as she was walking to the stage was “don’t screw up” over and over again, as if on loop.

She outstretched her hand to shake her president’s hand, and that’s when it happened.

It was as if Wendy was falling in slow motion. Down she went, and instead of her and meeting the president’s hand, it found the cold, hard floor instead. As did the rest of her…

The auditorium fell silent. Wendy’s father got up, his hand over his mouth in shock. She sensed the tension in the crowd, and wanted to stay on the ground and disappear.

She mustered her strength and pulled herself up off the ground. She smiled sheepishly at both the president and the audience, and she was surprisingly met with applause and a few laughs. The president let out a chuckle, and slowly handed her her diploma as if he was scared she would trip again.

Her face burned beet-red with embarrassment. “Congratulations, Wendy,” the president said to her as he shook her hand. Her face only turned more red, but this time, it was for a good reason. She was honored to receive her diploma that day, so much that the embarrassment of the night seemed to fade away as she strode off the stage with pride with her other graduated classmates.
