I interviewed Kim McBride, who is my mother at home in our living room. Kim has long thick black hair, wears glasses and is light skin. This memory is about when Kim and Keith first met. This memory means a lot to Kim because she is now married to Keith after 27 years of being together and 23 years being married.

Kim was putting on her white Janet Jackson T-shirt, white classic Reebok sneakers, and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans heading off to the skating rink with her cousin Shelley, as she did every Tuesday. Kim rushed downstairs in her brand-new outfit, grabbed her brown leather jacket and ran to the car with Shelley. The whole car ride to the skating rink, Shelley played Janet Jacksons album “Rhythm Nation 1814.” Shelley pulled up to the skating rink sign that read “Bergenfield Rink” in bright yellow lights.

Once they got inside the building there was 90’s music blasting throughout the place. When Kim walks in she feels a guy staring at her but she did not give him eye contact. As Kim walked over to the wooden bench to put on her skates this tall, brown skin, black curly head guy with a black baseball hat and a Fila sweat suit approached her. He said, “What’s your name?” Kim looked up and said, “My name is Kim”, yelling over the music. Kim realized this was the guy who was staring at her when she walked in. The guy tells Kim his name is Keith and he asked her, “Could you teach me how to skate?”  Kim laced up her quads and she begin to teach Keith how to skate around the rink. Keith was dragging his right leg and holding onto the wall the whole song.

After “This is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan, they went their separate ways. Kim went to check up on her cousin Shelley, as Kim looked over her shoulder she saw Keith skating by himself. Keith knew how to skate the whole time. Keith then saw Kim talking to Shelley, so he rushed off the floor to say hey to Shelley. Keith knew Shelley because they used to go to high school together. As he rolls up towards Kim and Shelley, Shelley goes “Omg, hey Keith how’s everything with you?” Keith hugs Shelley and said to Kim, “You know her?” Kim rolls her eyes and said, “Yeah that’s my cousin, how do you know her?” “We went to school together”, said Keith. “Are you lying about that too or you came over here to tell me you can skate?”, said Kim. “I just wanted to see how well you could skate and I thought you were very beautiful”, says Keith. “That is very nice of you, but you could have said that from the jump”, said Kim. Shelley began to walk away because she saw a friend she knew walking in. “I’m sorry, can we start over again, by the way you skate pretty good?” said Keith. Kim takes Keith’s offer and they skate the whole night away. Kim was starting to like Keith and his energy. When the last song went off Keith asked Kim for her number. She put her number in his black Motorola pager, gave it back to him and they went their separate ways.
