The Spaces Between Your Fingers

I interviewed my father, Kevin Hutt, about this during halftime of the Eagles vs. Bears game. During this time period both my Mom and Dad looked very similar to how they do today. While I was interviewing my dad you could definitely tell that this was a moment in his life that he would like to go back to.

It was fall in Philadelphia in the late 80’s and Kevin and his friends were planning on going out for the night.  Being 23 year olds, none of them had girlfriends and it was a Saturday night, with nothing really going on they decided to go out for the night.  Since they were out of college, the old party scene that they had recently been accustomed to, was now out of the cards.  With this being the case they decided that they were going to go to a place with as many people their age as possible.

Kevin had grown up in Bucks County, but him and his friends knew of a lot of places in Philadelphia that people fresh out of college would go to.  Since the people going to these places were once out of the range for Kevin and his friends, he was never able to experience what these places were like.  With most of his friends sharing the same feeling of wonder, they decided to go to a place they had heard of in college, the Trocadero.

Kevin had his group that he met up with and they made their way over to the club.  Once they arrived they scoped out the place and decided that they should just wander around and see what happens.  After some time wandering around, his group eventually bumped into a group of girls that was the same age as them.  Naturally, both groups began to interact with one another, hoping to strike up a good conversation with somebody from the other group.

Eventually after making their rounds through the group's Kevin into a girl named Paula and they started talking.  Immediately Kevin realized that this conversation had been unlike any other one of the conversations that he had with anyone else in the other group.  Kevin quickly realized that he had not had the spunk he normally did, and he was nervous to make his move with Paula, knowing that any tiny mistake could ruin any shot that he had with her.

After enough time passed, and Kevin was finally able to muster up the courage, he asked Paula if she wanted to dance.  Paula agreed, and Kevin knew that his window to shoot his ultimate shot would open.  After a while and the night was winding down, Kevin rifled off his shot, ambitiously asking Paula for her number, and luckily she gave it to him.  After giving Kevin her number she knew that she would see him again, but she did not know that he was the man the she was going to marry.
