Bob wasn't quite sure why his wife wanted him to come with her to work, but when Miss Priss, her boss's award-winning mare, collapsed he knew it was the right choice. His wife ended up saving both horses' lives, which resulted in her boss offering the foal to her as a reward. They had been looking for a new horse, and accepted him gratefully.

The full moon was high in the sky, the large clock on the wall just striking midnight, when Miss Priss’  legs buckled.

The horse’s high pitched whiny drew Tracey to her with preternatural speed, Bob close at her heels.

“Call Doctor Prichard.” She ordered as she dropped to her knees, producing a pair of gloves. Bob ran to the phone on the wall, dialing Prichard’s number as his wife dove elbow deep into the backside of the horse.

“Hello Tracey.” A groggy voice called over the receiver, causing Bob to jump and fumble the phone.

“Doctor Prichard! This is Bob, Tracey’s husband.”

“Oh, hello Bob. To what do I owe the midnight call?”

“Miss Priss just collapsed, and Tracey is getting acquainted with her insides.”

“Oh,” the doctor said nonchalantly, “ sounds like a breech birth.”

Bob placed his hand over the speaker. “Hey, honey. He said it sounds like a breach birth.”

Tracey recoiled from the horse, arms covered in gore and fluids. “UH, YEAH, YA THINK?” She shouted sarcastically before diving back in.

Bob calmly placed the phone to his ear.“Yeah, it’s a breech birth.” Bob hung up the phone after receiving confirmation that the doctor was on his way.

“What can I do?” He asked, jogging over to his wife, keeping his eyes firmly on the wooden slats of the stable wall.

“Just pet her.” Tracey said, amazingly calm, considering the situation.

“Gladly.” Bob responded, plopping down and cradling the horse’s head.

“Okay,” Tracey said a moment later,” I’m going to pull it out.”

Bob and the horse locked eyes, seeming to share the same thought: Did she just say-?

Miss Priss screamed, her body briefly contracting before going limp once more.

Bob stared, frozen. Fear overtook him, sending his heart into fluttering spasm. Is she dead? His eyes slowly crawled down her sable body, unsure if he wanted to know for sure.

His gaze lingered on her chest, which rose and fell slowly, but rhythmically. She was alive. A wave of relief washed over him, leaving his body in a sigh. His eyes continued along the horse, finding his wife.

Her grin was contagious, and as the doctor came running up, all they could do was stare at the large, healthy foal in her arms.
