You could call their first date successful, the only issue was that Alice had a girlfriend that they had a slight lapse of memory about. After a month long attempt at a failed open relationship, Alice broke up with her girlfriend. By that point though, Matt had gotten a girlfriend who lived in Germany, and the two of them agreed to just be friends.

The orange and pink of the setting sun reflected off the murky water of the Schuylkill, enveloping the near-empty boardwalk into kaleidoscopic ribbons of rippling color.

Matt didn’t even notice. As far as he was concerned, nothing could beat the look on Alice's face when she laughed at his jokes. A comfortable silence had settled around them as a single jogger ran past.

“So what made you come to the US?” Matt asked.

Alice shrugged and, in a thick British accent, said, “it was just a feeling I had. I don’t know if that makes any sense.”

“No, yeah, definitely.” Matt appreciated gut feelings. They were why the two of them were even speaking. If he hadn’t followed his gut, they would never be where they were.

Alice stopped, causing Matt to almost barrel into her. “This boardwalk doesn’t lead to your flat by chance, does it?” She turned to him, lacing her fingers with him.

He tried not to let the shock show as he said, “It can.”
