Both Josh and Alice apologized to Matt profusely for what they had done. They explained how little it meant, and how much they wished they hadn’t done it. Alice used this time to tell Matt how much she cared about him, and ultimately ended her relationship with her girlfriend in hopes of starting one with Matt.

The TV clicked off, the PS4 beeping as it powered down.

“Wow,” Matt said.

“That was terrible,” Josh said.

There was a groan of agreement as the people packed on the couch started to gather their things.

“All in favor of never letting Alan pick the movie again, raise your middle fingers.” Everyone turned to Alan, finger raised.

“I don’t know what y’all are talking about. That movie is art.” Alan said with mock indignation.

The gaggle of Matt’s friends filed out the door; everyone but Alice and Josh.

Josh lay on the couch. Spread eagle with his black beanie covering his eyes, while Alice rested her head on his calf, watching Matt silently.

“You guys staying?” Matt said.

“Yeah,” Josh said.

“Would you mind, terribly?” Alice asked. “I don’t want to walk to the underground this late.”

“Sure. You know where the blankets are.” Matt said, gesturing to the hall closet.

“You heard him,” Alice said, gently banging her head on Josh’s leg. “Go get the blankets.”

“Ugh,” Josh grunted. “You do it.”

“Come now, you expect someone as fair as me to fetch my own bedclothes?” Alice said, somehow making herself sound more British than she already was.

“Fine. But you owe me. And I get the couch.” Josh said, rolling onto the floor gracelessly before climbing to his feet.

“I think we can both fit,” Alice said with a sly glance at Josh.

Matt watched them silently from the doorway to his bedroom, and odd pull in his stomach. He was nervous, but he couldn’t place why. He went to bed.

The moment Matt saw her tousled hair and the far-flung pillows the next morning, he knew what had happened between her and Josh the night prior.

“Matt,” Alice said, sitting cross-legged with a mug of tea. “I’m sorry.”
