Being the youngest, Doreen got some pretty special treatment on her first day of school. She was incredibly excited, but she soon learned school wasn’t everything she thought it would be. The other issue that came up, was what her father would call her. Her father would tell her all the time how heavy she was, and would constantly make comments about her weight. Comments like that build up over time, and can do some serious damage to a child's self-esteem.

The pitter-patter of her feet fell in sync with the rain outside, the hazy sky conducting a song all her own as she twirled for the 35mm camera grasped in her father’s hands. Her sunshine smile shattered through the gray of the day as she twirled and pranced from doorway to doorway, hearing the click click of the camera with every step she took.

The warning bell rang out, and she could see her teacher smiling patiently as her father took one last picture. She ran to her parents, excitedly yelling,

“It’s almost time!” Her mother passed her her backpack, kissing her on the cheek. Doreen turned to her father, holding out her arms for a hug.

“Oh, my big baccala,” he groaned as he picked her up, feigning a backache. Doreen’s smile dimmed slightly, but with the ring of the bell, it ignited once more.
