After they separated, my mom's soon to be ex-husband got jealous. He called the FBI, claiming that Rob was feeding her classified information. Any sort of threat like that must be taken at face value and dealt with by the organization. My mom told me that one of the reasons she worked so well as an FBI wife was because she never did ask questions, and so Rob never felt the need to tell her anything.

Doreen opened the door and saw two men. The first, a blond man who looked like he had just arrived from a shoot with GQ, smiled at her. The second, a stumpy man who seemed to have grown outward rather than up, scowled.

“Ms. Laberdee?” The blond man said.

“Yes?”

“My name is Special Agent Parker.” The blonde man displayed his badge. “This is Special Agent Dill,” Agent Parker motioned to the small man next to him. The second man nodded, revealing a shiny patch of balding scalp, which almost seemed to have been waxed.

Doreen smiled at the two men, confused. “Are you two friends of Rob’s?” She didn’t recognize the men, but she could hardly have expected to know the entire department.

“Oh, no ma’am,” Parker said.

“This is business,” Dill said with a scowl.

“Business?” Doreen said

“May we come in?”

“O-oh, of course.” Doreen stepped out of the doorway. The two men entered, Parker standing politely next to the floral couch, and Dill planting himself firmly on it. Doreen stood in front of the men, feeling like her living room had become a stage.

“May I?” Parker said, pointing to the couch.

Doreen nodded. “Can I ask what kind of business you’re here on?”

“Has Agent Mulry been feeding you classified information?” Dill said.

“W-what? Of course not!” Doreen said

“There’s no need to be nervous Ms. Laberdee,” Parker said gently.

“Other than the fact that this could be a federal offense,” Dill said.

“As long as you answer honestly about your relationship with Agent Mulry, we won’t take too much of your time.” Parker flashed her a smile.

“Speaking of your relationship, aren’t you two both married?” Dill asked.

“You’re separated from your husband, yes?” Parker looked at her, his pleasant smile constantly contrasting Parker’s sneer.

“Couldn’t you have waited for the divorce before you started dating? And why him? Why an FBI agent?” Dill demanded “Are you with him for the money? Or something more?”

Doreen looked back and forth between the men, her heart thudding out of her chest, and eyes burning with frustrated tears.
