The Spaces Between Your Fingers

My parents had been dating for a while at this point, and while I certainly wasn’t planned, I wasn’t exactly a surprise. Ironically, the person who took the news the worst was my aunt. My mom likes to tell me that I’m the greatest gift my dad ever gave her.

“Rob.” Doreen’s voice was thready, her nerves getting the best of her. She had no idea how he would take it. Would he be scared? Angry? Happy?

“Yeah?” Rob called over his shoulder. His attention was on the kitchen counter. He was preparing something for dinner, but she couldn’t remember what.

“Rob, I…” Should she just come out and say it? “Rob, I…” Why was it so hard? Rob had turned around. He was looking at her, making it even harder. His brown eyes were worried.

“Doreen, what’s wrong?” Doreen looked at him. Dark hair, dark, warm eyes. She wondered if the baby would look like him.

“I’m pregnant.”
