John was my mom’s first serious boyfriend. He was her high school sweetheart, and until his disappearance, they were happy. This was the first time she met John, Eddy bringing him over specifically to meet her. They immediately hit it off and talked late into the night. It wouldn’t be until later that they began dating.

“Here they come!” Diane said, running into the living room from the front door. Doreen launched off of the couch and into a panicked string of questions.

“How’s my hair? Is there anything in my teeth? Are my clothes wrinkled? Should I-” Doreen cut herself off as two men entered the house. Doreen back stepped to stand beside Doreen, whispering,

“You look great.” The first of the two men was Eddy, Diane’s mustachioed boyfriend. Doreen had been talking to him when he mentioned the second man, John. John was tall and thin, his hair dark and eyes bright. The moment he looked at Doreen, he grinned widely, a  mix of goofy and suave.

“Doreen, John. John, Doreen,” Eddy said, introducing the two. John crossed the small room, holding out his arms for a hug from Doreen. She met him, embracing him.

“It’s great to finally meet you. Eddy’s told me a lot about you,” John said, squeezing Doreen as though they had been friends for ages. Doren felt herself melt against him, her heart beating in a strange staccato.

“So, we ready to go?” Eddy asked, giving Diane a knowing grin. The two disengaged and headed for the door.

Hey, John
