Every Chick-fil-A grand opening is different, but they are all the same in at least one way; there are always issues and nothing will be perfect. This moment was but a single moment of many instances in which Paige was among chaos and struggle.

Paige always felt uncomfortable being in a position of power.  During the first few days of a Chick-fil-A grand opening, each trainer and team member relied on her judgment and guidance. She had done this several times before, but she still was filled with self-doubt and dread. Her thoughts were always over analyzing and lacked in confidence. In addition, that first day the store was open, they did not have enough employees and she felt it through the team’s struggles.

It was one issue right after another.  The person preparing drinks was not performing and customers stood idle impatiently waiting for their refreshments. Strange smells of burnt chicken emanated from the kitchen and made people ask questions in the front counter area. The employees out in the dining room were not ensuring that the restaurant was kept clean.  Bags of fulfilled orders sat lifeless on the counter waiting to be handed out. Coffee was being brewed without the nozzle on and a black waterfall of steaming liquid covered the floor. Pacing back and forth between workstations and employees, her sunken face which was filled with internal worries always seemed to stay hidden behind that cheery eyed facade.

Days like these were testaments to her stoicism and resolve.  There was no time to take a break from the chaos. Food had to be made and guests needed to be served.  Paige, just like most days in her life, became dull to her low blood sugar and dehydration induced headaches. Performing to her highest capability was of paramount importance. Her own health and well being came after, especially when serving at grand openings.

“Kathy, I really appreciate the effort you are putting in today,” Paige whispered in Kathy’s ear in spite of the mayhem, “but instead of saying your welcome, make sure you tell them it's my pleasure.” Just like the other fresh Chick-fil-A workers, Kathy seemed flustered and confused. It was always in Paige's best interest to try her best to motivate and praise the new employees on their first day.

Kathy turned towards Paige with that fake customer service smile that everyone puts on in hard times, “Absolutely.”  Looking at Paige’s calm, collected, and reassuring guise, Kathy returned to her register with a small sense of consolation.
