I interviewed Anna Thomas while eating breakfast with her before she went to work at her hospital. She obtained a 4 year nursing degree from a university in Germany. She chose to leave her home to study her passion in a foreign land, and it proved to be more challenging than she could ever imagine.

Anna bundled up against the cold, but the freezing wind drys her throat with every breath. She has a long walk ahead of her, but with each passing step the pain becomes slightly more unbearable, and the longing for her old home worsens. Anna is in Germany. She is studying for a nursing degree among strangers. She was born in India, with 3 brothers and 2 sisters, she always had company. She was used to the warm hospitality that India offers, but the people here were like the weather, cold and brutish. She wouldn't find what she feels is home here. She was alone now, battling the cold, with no one to brush up against or to keep her strong. Life in Germany is tough, especially as an immigrant. Having to speak a new language, embrace a new culture, and eat these new foods proved to be a very tough life for Anna. While eating bread and cold cuts she longed for rice and hot foods. She imagined a bowl of steaming rice in the palm of her hands as she trudged on through the snow and ice. Suddenly her foot slipped, and she was falling. She hit the ice hard, and scraped her knee. The pain stung. She stared down at the cold hard ground and she hung there for a second, unsure of whether to keep going or to stop and die here. She gingerly picked herself back up, and continued onward. And eventually, she made it to class.
