“We have reached our cruising altitude now, so I am going to switch the seat belt sign off,” announcement from the pilot. Tone looking out the widow and notice the landing script, WOW he thought to himself; I’m in Iceland! The plane lands and the final announcement from the pilot “Thank you for flying, we hope you enjoyed flight welcome to Keflavik Iceland!” Again he’s thinking we just landed in Iceland.

“Living in Keflavik, Iceland”

As he looked back why he joined the Navy he truly wanted to make a difference and give back to his family was one reason that drew him to the military, he thought the Navy would give that to him.

During his time in the Navy he had the privilege to serve on many Navy vessels and the advantage to life on a ship and travel and live abroad he to different countries by Navy vessels.

As he stand over his luggage packing to leave for Keflavik, Iceland, you hear snap, snap the closing of the suitcase; his sister walks into his room letting him know how much she will miss him with a Big Teddy Bear Hug!

Waiting at the luggage carousel his sponsor Chris help load his luggage into the car and they leave the Keflavik Airport for the Naval Communications Station, Keflavik. “It looks even more amazing in person!”  Tone said he took it all in.

Looking out the window the beautiful landscape, he said as they ride the beautiful country roads. As Chris drove he began telling Tone where he would be living for the next two years. It’s has the reputation of being a remote country. However, it’s actually North America’s closest European neighbor, located halfway between the U.K. and the U.S.

The sun shines in Iceland nearly 24 hours a day during the peak of the summer and in mid-winter, you will experiences the Northern Lights, it’s only light about four to five hours a day. Within the country you’ll find volcanoes, mountains, glaciers and glacial lagoons, black sand beaches, lava caves and towering seaside cliffs. “WOW” Tone said, even though he was thinking, he said this in one breath as he chuckle.

Besides the freezing cold Tone was ready for Iceland by jumping on the tourist bandwagon, his first trip was to Iceland’s tourist attraction, The Blue Lagoon. After receiving direction from Chris,

“Follow the signs The Blue Lagoon.”

As they drove through gruesome lava fields but were getting closer to the wisps of rising steam, Tone notice that was the rising steam he seen from the airport. Suddenly The Blue Lagoon appeared, providing a visual thrill of electric sky-blue water in impressive contrast with surrounding black craggy lava hills.

“WOW” the surrounding lava field resembled something you would only see in your wildest dreams, with huge moss-covered rocks haphazardly complied on the ground, and funnels of steam rising to meet low-lying gray clouds in the distance.

He never imagine coping with his First Day of Basic Training would lead to Iceland!
