Michael tells about the excitement of his sister bringing a new baby to the world. To add to the anticipation, they kept the gender a secret until the birth of the baby. Michael explains how his curiosity got the best of him while waiting for his new niece or nephew.

“The baby’s coming! Everyone get dressed, we’re gonna leave in five.” Michael heard his mom yell as he was in the basement playing video games. His sister was nearly two weeks late and was finally ready to pop. Michael’s heart sang as he ran up the steps, nearly tripping, to throw on a sweatshirt and head to Abington Hospital. He was overwhelmed with happiness and a nagging curiosity, as his sister Liz and her husband Joe decided to keep the sex of the baby a surprise. He simply could not wait to meet his niece or nephew.

It was a brisk day on January 30th, 2005 and the harsh winds hit Michael in the face as he hurried from the car to the hospital entrance. He was halted by the secretary and told that he needed to sign in before going up to the delivery area. Michael and his parents adhered to this rule, all the while Michael could tell that his mom was holding back tears in preparation of meeting her first grandchild.

Only about 30 minutes had passed since they received word that Liz would be delivering soon, but already everyone was getting anxious to meet the new baby. Only one other person was allowed in the delivery room, so Michael’s mom deemed herself that person. Michael and his dad sat on a small couch in the waiting area. Michael and his father tried to make small talk to distract themselves from their curiosity and excitement. His palms began to moisten as he wiped them on his pants. He had hoped for a nephew because he never had a younger brother and this would be the closest thing to it.

“I mean the Packers are strong contenders but they have no defense ... “ Michael’s father continued the small talk as Michael’s mind wandered. After minutes of talking about football and other random subjects to try to contain their excitement, Michael’s mom returned and told them that the baby was here. She still had not given “the baby” a pronoun, and the secret was killing Michael.

The walk from the waiting room into the delivery room made Michael’s stomach turn because he was so eager. “If it’s a girl I’ll still love her, and maybe she’ll be one of those girls that loves hockey and football and stuff”, he thought to himself. Hurriedly walking behind his parents, Michael paced into the room where Liz and Joe resided. Teary eyed, he saw Liz holding the baby in a white blanket given to her by the hospital. He felt almost nauseous from excitement. Liz looked up at her family with her hair mangled and her eyes wet and tired-looking.

Slowly and suspenseful, she exclaimed, “Say hi to the new baby… boy!”
