This was the last memory Michael has with his grandfather. This memory depicts the difficulties of watching Michael's paternal grandfather slowly pass away. Michael's grandfather was in good health up until his very last day, when it was discovered that he had kidney failure. His family had a tough time letting go of the only remaining family member from his generation.

After a three hour drive up to a hospital in the Poconos, Michael walked in to say his goodbyes to his paternal grandfather. The bright white halls blinded his eyes and the smell of hand sanitizer stung his nose. Michael’s grandfather had fallen suddenly ill, and the doctors had called the Bonaccorsis to alert them that he would soon pass on. Michael felt uneasy watching his dad try to cope with the news. Michael’s grandfather was the last living grandparent he had left, and he could not bare to watch his parents go through this emotionally testing process again.

Michael and his family walked into the hospital to find their grandfather, breathing slowly and unconscious. Immediately, his father had to leave the room. Michael studied his grandfather, and felt hot tears stream down his cheek and splatter onto the floor. He was used to seeing his grandfather make inappropriate jokes, and rough house with the cousins. It left the whole family feeling queasy once they had seen his current appearance. Michael’s father walked back in with bloodshot, wet eyes. Michael fidgeted his hands to try to distract himself.

His grandfather began to come to after a little while. Michael noticed that he looked pale and his eyes were glassy. Everyone tried not to confuse him by asking too many questions. He seemed like he was trying his best to hold conversation, but his brain was slowly giving up and sometimes he would just pause in mid sentence. The mood of the room was serious.

Michael’s Aunt Karen walked in with her daughter, Nicole. The family sat around their beloved grandfather/father for what they knew were the last moments of his life. Michael heard loud beeping that signaled that his grandfather’s pulse had gone down. The same nurse from earlier rushed in along with a doctor who had not introduced himself. Michael was assessing the situation while simultaneously trying not to break down in front of his family.

Everyone quietly gave their goodbyes per the doctor’s orders. Michael, Liz, and Nicole patted their grandfather and touched his hand before leaving. Michael was heart broken. Michael was the only grandson in the room and he had been trying to be strong during this time for his parents and the girls, but his body could no longer keep up this façade. He wanted to run back to his grandfather and collapse onto the hospital bed.

“This isn’t fair.” Michael thought to himself with a tear in his eye. Although there would never be a good time for his grandfather to die, he just felt that this specific moment in time shouldn’t be the end. He felt a sadness for his father, and pity for his increasingly weak grandfather. Amidst all of these thoughts, Michael was quickly hustled out of the room; he looked back to see his grandfather’s eyes close for the last time.

Final Goodbye
