I interviewed my sister Hannah via Facetime. Like I wrote in my last postcard, Hannah is very athletic and played sports for the majority of her life. Field hockey was a sport that meant a lot to Hannah and scoring the first goal of the season, in her first game, meant a lot to her and it was something that motivated her throughout the rest of her college career.

Fall of 2010 consisted of a lot of firsts for Hannah. “It was her first time entering a public school when she became a freshman in high school, her first time walking to school on her own, and her first time playing field hockey.” Hannah has always been the athletic type so when she found out her school had a field hockey team, she jumped at the opportunity. Hannah knew none of her other friends were signing up for the team, but that did not stop her. She knew she wanted to try this sport for the first time.

September 2010 was Hannah’s first field hockey game. She practiced hard to get here and was very excited. “What if I forget how to play when I get on the field!” she said to her dad who was standing on the sideline with the rest of Hannah’s family watching her. “Don’t say that. Coach said you were doing exceptionally at practice, you will do just fine,” he said back. Hannah hugged all of her family members as she prepared to take the field for the first time. “Let’s go Hannah!” they all yelled from the stands. “You got this!”

The referee blew her whistle and the game started. After the first 10 minutes of the game, Hannah’s coach benched her. “Was I doing something wrong? Was I not playing correctly?” she asked her coach. “No you were doing just fine, we need to give other girls a try too,” her coach explained. As Hannah sat on the bench she felt discouraged and that she wasn't playing to the best of her ability

The game continues and time and running out, yet the score is still 0-0. Both teams are playing great yet they cannot score. “Hannah get ready you’re going back in,” her coach yells to her. Hannah jumped off the bench faster than she ever has. She put in her mouth guard and got ready to take the field again. “She is back in!” her dad yells to the best of the family.

As Hannah gets back on the field, she tells herself that she needs to prove to everyone she is good enough to play this sport and succeed at it. She knew what she needed to do to prove that. Hannah yelled “I am open!” to one of her teammates, she gets past the balls, she shoots, she scored! Hannah’s teammates come and tackle her to the ground. Hannah’s goal set the score to 1-0 and she helped her team win the game. This was another first Hannah was able to add to her list of “Fall 2010 Firsts.”
