The Spaces Between Your Fingers

Every Friday my grandpa would take off work so that he could take me out and hang out with me. When I was talking to him, we both reminisced and talked about how special this was to each of us. He said that it meant a lot to him to be able to do that and be able to be a part of my life that way. We both looked forward to Fridays so that we could have this special time together and it meant the world to me that he did that for me.

It was 6 in the morning and Gary was woken up by his grandson, Brendan, who ran into his room and jumped into his bed to watch tv. The smell of his wife’s pancakes engulfed the room as the two boys watched tv. Brendan and Gary ran out of the room and sat at the table resuming where they were in their show while their plates were loaded with pancakes and bacon. It was a special day and the whole house knew it. It was Friday. Every Friday Gary took off work to hang out and take Brendan to all his favorite places.

“Today I have to go get the dry cleaning, pick up some tape from the hardware store, and get the car washed. What do you want to do today after we get our errands done?” Gary asked as they both munched on their pancakes.

“I would like to go to the fire station and go look at all the firetrucks then go play at Chucky Cheese” Brendan stated in between bites.

“Alright, I like that plan lets get a move on our day. Go get changed” Gary recommended.

The two went and got ready for the day then climbed into the car and set off for the car wash. This is the one thing that Brendan dreaded about his day with his grandpa. Gary knew Brendan feared the car wash even though he never actually said it, but they went every week anyway in hopes that Brendan would toughen open and overcome such a silly fear.

After the car wash, all the other errands were complete, and it was now on to the best part of the week. Brendan loved to go to the fire station and play on all the trucks and his grandpa knew this. They arrived at the station with warm welcomes from all the firefighters. They were regulars and everyone knew them. After about an hour or two of messing around there, they left for lunch.

“Can we get the no-no place for lunch please grandpa?”

Knowing that Brendan’s mother did not like Brendan eating at McDonald's he agreed, and they went to go get lunch and play in the play area.

After their meal, they went across town to go to Chucky Cheese. Brendan and Gary played the outback racing game for hours. They had most of the high scores on the game. They would race each other for quite some time until they got hungry. They would go sit and order a cheese pizza, Brendan’s absolute favorite. While they waited for the food, they talked about all the things that they did and sometimes even planned out next Friday.
