I sat down with my Grandpa in Queens, New York, and of the many stories he shared, this particular story seemed to been one of his fondest memories. I could see the emotion in his eyes when he told me this story. He began tearing up a bit telling me his experience with fulfilling this holy pilgrimage. Mecca is a holy site that is very symbolic and meaningful to Muslims from all over the world- because that is where the religion started; there is so much history and meaning behind the place, which is why it means so much to Muslims from across the globe.

In the hot summer of June 1994  Saleem and his wife finally landed in Mecca all the way from Queens, New York to complete a holy pilgrimage. This was a very momentous occasion for the both, as Mecca is considered to be one of the holiest sites for Muslims across the globe. Saleem  was full of emotions; he possessed both a combination of nervousness and euphoria. He held his wife’s hand tightly as waves of people were walking around the Kaabah. In his head, Saleem was so astonished with the diversity of people. Although they were all Muslims, they all came from such diverse backgrounds; all sorts of colors were present. While walking around the Kabbah,  in the hot weather, both he and his wife were so immersed in the entire vibe of the holy site, that they were both so silent and taking everything in. All sorts of thoughts went on in Saleem’s head; one of which being how grateful he was to be able to partake in such an amazing journey. You see, Saleem had been saving much of his earnings for an entire year for this particular  trip; it isn’t cheap flying all the way from New York to Saudi Arabia. Eventually the call to prayer went off and both he and his wife began making their way to Masjid Al Harram- the mosque that surrounded the kabbah, for prayer.
