The Spaces Between Your Fingers

I interviewed my grandma about big moments that happened throughout her life. My grandma came from a very big and loving family. Finding out about her dad having cancer was a detrimental day for her and her siblings. It played a big role in how she matured and grew up. It made her love and appreciate her loved ones even more.

"Trudy come in here!" Trudy's mother yelled down the hallway. She had a cold and worried tone in her voice that made Trudy know this must be something serious.

Trudy immediately got up, made her way down the hall and into the kitchen. There was a cold and stiff feeling in the air. She walked into the room and saw her 5 other siblings sitting down around the table. The worried look on her mother's face made her feel so uncomfortable and brought a silence over the entire family.

Trudy's father was also in the room, sitting in the corner. Trudy looked to her father for reassurance, for a glance, for anything that would bring comfort to her and her siblings before hearing what their mother had brought them there to say.

Trudy stared in her fathers direction for several moments. He kept his head down.

She sat and waited. Thirty long seconds in pure silence.

Finally, Trudy's brother Bobby spoke up. "What's the matter, mom?" "Just tell us."

Trudy's mother finally spoke. "Your father has cancer."

Trudy didn't think it was possible for the room to get any colder. Any stiffer. Any worse. But boy was she was wrong.

The world stopped and started falling in a down-whirl spiral. No news could have been worse. How could this happen to her? To their family? To her father? Trudy was paralyzed with fear and terror. How would they get through this?

Trudy thought to herself, “I can’t lose my dad.”
