My mom discussed her fond memories of going on a trip every year when I was a child. We would go to Long Beach Island yearly with her best friend, Cathy Jo and her family. When discussing a favorite memory of the beach I learned about how devilish my little sister was.

The shore was Vicki’s favorite place to be. It was a time that she could take off from teaching kids all day at school, kick back, relax and enjoy the waves with her best friend, Cathy Jo, and a drink in her hand. “Bless Cathy Jo’s heart, she really understands I need a break”. Vicki thought to herself and turned over in her bed.

Vicki, hungover from the night before decided to sleep in a little and could hear laughs and giggles coming from the other room. The giggles began to rise with a crescendo and it sounded like a tornado. Cathy Jo was turning their sleepy children into little energizer bunnies. She had decided to begin a game of hide and seek with the little demons. Vicki rolled over and tried to settle herself back to sleep, too tired to deal with the madness just yet.

With eyes closed, Vicki heard her door slam open like a rocket and Vicki flipped over to see Cathy Jo soaring over her body in slow motion. She looked like one of those YouTube videos of puppies trying to catch treats in their mouths and missing. Cathy Jo slammed into the crack of Vicki’s bed, shaking between the wall and the bed.

“Please don’t let your devil child find me! I’m terrified!” Cathy Jo whispered in both fear and laughter. The two of them laid as still as possible and with heavy footsteps, the two women could feel an evil presence outside the bedroom door. Vicki saw a drop of fearful sweat roll down Cathy Jo’s eyebrow as she mouthed, “What did I get myself into?”

Abbie, with bright red curls, slammed the wooden door open with an immense amount of force for a four-year-old. Her stomps seemed to echo a “fee-fi-fo-fum” energy into the room. Vicki could feel Cathy Jo begin to quake.

“Where is she?” Abbie asked with a grin that had an evil aura to it.

“No-no-not here” Vicki stuttered looking at her determined child. With a quick hop, Abbie leaped onto the bed and hung her face into the crack, inches away from Cathy Jo.

“I fouuuuuuund you!” Abbie cheered as her read curls hung in Cathy Jo’s terrified face. Vicki quickly grabbed Abbie and swung her away from the crack allowing Cathy Jo a second to escape. Cathy Jo stood up and sprinted out of the room to make an escape from the demon, laughing every step of the way. Abbie waddled off after Cathy Jo and Vicki began to laugh as tears rolled down her face.

“There simply is no better alarm clock when you’re down the shore.” Vicki thought and smiled to herself. “Your turn Abbie, I’m going to find youuuuuuu!” She yelled and hopped out of bed, chasing the monster’s red curls down the hallway.
