“Grandma, where are you going?”
“I’m going up to check on my garden. Would you like to come help me?”
Clara exclaimed, “YES!”
Clara got up from the couch in an instant and ran to the door to put on her shoes. She always loved going up on the roof of her grandmother’s house to check up on her peppers. As soon as she got her shoes on she jumps up excitedly wait for her grandma to get her shoes on. Clara helps her grandma get up from the chair and led the way to the ladder.
“Now, watch your step Clara, you don’t want to hurt yourself,” Grandma yelled out in front of her as Clara was rushing up the ladder.
Grandma knew Clara liked to run around and clumsily get herself either lost or injured but there was no way of stopping Clara from exploring her environment.
“Grandma!”, Clara exclaimed, “Did you see how fast I made it up the ladder?”
“You were so fast I didn’t even see you go up!”
At the top of the roof, there was a border of wood planter boxes with chili peppers and perilla plants. It wasn’t the biggest garden in the world but there was more than enough produce.
“Grandma, is this pepper ready to be picked?”, Clara asked anxiously.
“Not yet, Clara. Look here. You have to wait until the pepper is completely red.” ,Grandma stated, picking a fully red pepper to show Clara.
After a couple of hours of picking and laying the peppers out on mats so that they can dry out in the sun, they go back in so that Grandma can make a nice hot dinner for the family. The family all gathered together to enjoy a meal using the produce from Grandma’s garden.
This is the memory Clara recalled at the dining room table when asked about her favorite memory with her grandma. She finds herself cooking a lot, using her grandma’s recipes.
