This was a memory that my Mother had from the beginning of the holiday season. She had always loved Christmas time, especially the part of decorating the tree. She had mentioned to me that they always had Johnny Mathis's Christmas album playing in her Grandmother's house, who she lived with, during that time of year. She also mentioned having a beautiful angel tree topper instead of a star.

The creaking of the steps interrupted the sound of “Winter Wonderland” by Johnny Mathis playing as Kim’s Aunt MaryAnn was coming down from the attic with the artificial tree. The two of them set up the tree in the same spot they do every year, right next to the tv where you could see it sparkling with the lights on at night while sitting on the couch. MaryAnn wrapped the lights around the tree while Kim looked at all the different ornaments they had. Each of them reminded her of a specific memory, whether it was a trip they had took or a time in school where they had them make ornaments. Her eyes beamed as she noticed the U.S. flag one that she had made her Grandfather who was a veteran before he passed; she missed him a lot during the holidays, but it was bittersweet seeing the small memories of him this time of year. When it was time for her to put them on the tree, she did it strategically, placing her favorite ones in the center on display for everyone to see. This included the one with the names of her and all her cousins on it, which they had gotten for their Grandmother as a gift last Christmas. Her smile lit up as she placed the last ornament on one of the branches. The last step was putting on the angel tree topper. She had always loved that they had an angel rather than a star because it was different and added character. She took out the step stool so that she could reach and set it on the top branch. “How does it look?”, she asked. “Beautiful!”, replied her Aunt and Grandmother simultaneously.
