Omar never had a father. This is how he prepared to fall in love with his son for the first time.

November 22nd 2019. How would you feel as a man watching your son come into this world when you never had a father yourself? Would you be prepared? Would you think you’d be good enough? That’s how Omar felt watching Julia push for eleven hours straight. Every push brought Omar closer and closer to a bond that he had never felt before. Omar was their through the entire labor with Julia, through every step of the way. He had fallen in love as soon as his son was born. Only if he had a father to feel the same about him. He wondered if his dad would have loved him as much as he loves Giovanni or if he would’ve been there through his mother’s labor as he was for Julia. He wondered what decisions his father would have made. Omar never had a father. He was killed in Puerto Rico due to gun violence. He did not know how to be a father. Omar never had a positive male role model in his life before. And the ones he did have were killed, some right before his eyes. His uncle who was basically a father to him was shot 21 times. Omar was standing right next to his uncle when this happened and was only twelve years old. Both fear and excitement filled his mind and heart as he prepared to take on the biggest honor of his life. One thing I can say is that Omar is a great father. Amazing at that. His father would be incredibly proud at how much he has turned his life around for his son. Omar wants to give Giovanni what he never had as a child. He doesn’t want to watch him struggle and go down the wrong paths in life as he did. Omar wants his son to look up to him, as he never had a man to look up to. He wants to be his best friend and teacher which is something he had missed out on his whole life. Omar gives the love to his son that he deserved to have. He is the father that he should have had himself. What I have learned from Omar is that pain makes you stronger. And I have never met a stronger man.
