My dad, Georgiy, has always been a huge fan of music, particularly rock. Blinded by the Light is his favorite song to this day and he can clearly remember that first time he heard it on vinyl. This was a very special and unique experience for him, especially since vinyl records and music from outside of the Soviet Union were very hard to come by.

As soon as his last class is over, George rushes to pack up his bag, almost losing more of its contents instead, and makes his way straight for the exit. Today, Sasha is going to show them the new vinyl he found, and just thought of this makes George walk even faster.

George has almost left the schoolyard when he hears Dimitri yelling after him.

“George! Wait up!! Why are you walking so damn fast?” Dimitri is out of breath from trying to catch up in this cold. “Jeez, you could have at least waited for me inside instead of running off. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to these winters.” Dimitri mutters the last part under his breath.

“Sorry, sorry, you’re right but come on hurry up! I don’t want them to start without us. You know that Nikolia can get impatient.” George playfully tugs Dimitri forward to encourage some more effort in his walk.

Dimitri laughs, “You’ve got that right!” The two of them walk quickly, barely talking because of the cold, and before they know it, they’ve arrived at Sasha’s apartment complex. George buzzes Sasha’s room and almost instantly they’re let into the building.

“Sasha must be just as anxious to listen to the record as you! Must be a good one then,” Dimitri says to George as they make their way up the stairs, hopping two or three at a time. They finally make it to Sasha’s and go inside.

“Where do you think you’re going with your shoes on!” Sasha’s mother calls out to them before Dimitri and George get a chance to step farther in.

“Sorry!” they both exclaim, practically jumping out of their shoes before going to Sasha’s room. Nikolia and Sasha are already there, Nikolia lounging on Sasha’s bed and Sasha with the Vinyl already in his hands as he prepares to put it on the player.

“About time you guys get here!” Nikolia moves over on the bed and George plops down next to him while Dimitri decides to sit on the floor.

“Alright, alright, just put the record on already.” George’s leg bounces up and down off the carpet aggressively while he has all of his attention focused on the black disk in Sasha’s hands. Carefully, Sasha takes the disk and places it down on the record player. To George, it looks as though Sasha is moving in slow motion as he turns on the player and hesitantly picks up the needle before letting it gently fall down.

First, it’s just static before a synth and drums quietly come in and build. And then,

Blinded by the light! Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.

George leans his head back against the wall, his leg finally relaxing, and closes his eyes as he lets out the breath he didn’t know he was holding. One day, he thinks, one day we’ll have it all.
