The Spaces Between Your Fingers

My brother, sister, and I had all received Superman t-shirts that came with capes. We were so excited that we all put them on and had my mom and dad participate in the game. Of course, catching three kids for an hour puts some stress on your back, so they had stopped the game.
My sister and I did feel guilty about not watching our brother, but we did try to make up for it when we heard he was going to the hospital…by removing every toy from his room to bring to the place. The irony was that he was sent home the same night, and we had to return every single toy to its proper place.

It wasn’t like leaving my three year old brother in my eight
year old hands was a good plan. I suppose my parents just assumed that he would
listen to what I told him to do, or that I would be watchful enough to make
sure he didn’t do anything stupid. Both of those assumptions were completely
wrong. My dad and my mom had gone outside to work in the yard, and my sister
and I were busy enjoying Superman. Just
before my parents had gone outside, they’d played this game with us where we’d
climb to the fourth step and jump off, pretending we could fly, as our parents
caught us. Now the game had stopped, and I just wanted to enjoy a pleasant two
hours watching Christopher Reeve save the day. My brother, however, didn’t
exactly understand that the game was over. He got off the couch and climbed the
stairs. “Katia, catch me!!” he screamed. I didn’t even turn around, I was so
annoyed. “Sit and watch the movie, Nick.”
He yelled in that shrill toddler voice once more and I groaned. I turned
to yell one last time when…he jumped. His arms were outstretched; his long
brown hair flew out from behind him. I swore he was actually flying…until he
landed on the tile floor. Then came the screams, and the blood, and I had no idea
what to do. My mother ran into the house, and scooping him into her arms, she
cleaned my brother off and took him to the hospital. His teeth had gone through
his lip. She told me, later, that after waiting for hours in the emergency room
for stitches, his lip had healed all by itself.
