Eleni’s sister was put in charge of directing the entire concert that night. She’d been planning it for months and hadn't found anyone worth singing with except for Eleni. She dragged her sister into the music world, and to this day Eleni still sings. Now she rather enjoys performing, and goes for solo roles in the choir quite often. She has fond memories of that performance as her first.

I didn’t like singing, and even more than that I didn’t like
performing in front of a bunch of people. I felt like I was making an idiot of
myself. Who would want to hear a twelve year old sing?   “Eleni”, my sister said. “I need you to play Sweeney!” She meant Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
She was performing a skit from the musical and needed someone to be the Barber
to her Mrs. Lovett, the Pie Maker. My sister had no problem performing in front
of people, she was a regular ham. Let her make a fool of herself, I didn’t want
to be so embarrassed. "I'm a
girl, Katia! I don't want to play a boy!"

"The theater has had a tradition of having men play women since it's inception. Why can't you play a boy?" The answer was that I just didn't want to. The only problem was that I have an alto voice. It's deep and dramatic and my sister found it perfect. She told me that I was the only one she trusted not to mess it up, and after a while, I just caved.  I had my hair cut to look more like a
boy, and painted a white streak in my hair. I got a poofy shirt and a dark blue
vest that I thought would pass for something a barber would wear. I practiced with her for weeks, as the feeling of stage fright began to grow
. The day of the concert eventually came, and with it a strange sense of calm. Right before I went onstage, my mom went over to me, and told me that I could
get out of it if I wanted to…but I told her that, now, I wanted to see how this
would play out. So I did. I swear, we were the best act of the night.
