The Spaces Between Your Fingers

This was a night of firsts for Ben. On April 27th of last year, Ben went on his first “real date,” with his girlfriend. On that date, he also had his first kiss. They had just been to the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, and were on their way to an open mic night at “Jersey Java.” She was wearing a brown, ankle length dress, and a brown belt with a silver buckle.

“Watch your step Madame,” I said, trying to be chivalrous.

“Why thank you, kind sir.”

I reached for her hand as she stepped down from the train. But she playfully pushed it away and hopped down on her own. A few steps later she reached for mine and I wrapped it around hers, intertwining our fingers like I’d imagine you’re supposed to.

“All right, so now we’re only about two blocks away from Jersey Java,” I said.

We kept walking, and she began swinging our interlocked hands. With each streetlight we approached, her piercings would glow with the reflected light, only to dim as we moved past it. Along the perimeter of each ear ran five piercings, which shone even beneath her ear-length brown hair. She was significantly shorter than me, to the point that I had to look downward in order to make eye contact with her.

“So I’ve heard all this talk about birthday kisses,” I said.

“And?”

“Well, I was wondering. Are they a myth, or do they really happen?”

She stepped backwards onto the curb, which made her about a foot taller. It also made her lips about a foot taller, and suddenly they were pressed against mine.
