John lived in London before he turned eighteen, and was there for a good chunk of World War II. His home was located right between a military airbase and an international railroad. Because these two structures were often the targets of military bombardment, stray rockets and bombs often made their way into John’s neighborhood. When that doodlebug (V2 rocket) exploded so close to their home, it lodged a piece of shrapnel in the wall. After nine years of temperature and humidity fluctuation, the warped wood pushed it out. -Written by Marcus K. - Summer 2014

“John, get in here!"

My mother was staring out the window, frantically waving her arms over her head. I wiped my hands down the front of my corduroy shorts, smearing loose soil on their green fabric. Then the air raid sirens began to blare.

I ran to the front door before my eardrums got the chance to burst. When I opened it, she was still there at the window, staring. Transfixed. I watched the doodlebug block out the sun like some sinister moon. Its tail fins sliced through the late-afternoon sky, and it dove. Our windows imploded.

Nine years later...

“Creeeeak,” said that noise in our kitchen.

“Jackie boy, stop screwing around,” my mom demanded.

But I wasn’t.

“Creeeeeak!”

In fact, I could even tell where it was coming from--behind me. I spun round my kitchen chair and watched as a chunk of shrapnel wiggled through the wallpaper like a moth from its cocoon.
