The Spaces Between Your Fingers

Growing up, Anthony was a piano & organ prodigy. He remembers playing piano for Nancy, the beautiful young woman he would go on to share his life with. This story was written by Shiyi Tian after an interview with Anthony - Fall 2014.

One July afternoon I had Nancy come to my house. Nancy is 3 and a half years younger than me.  I still remember the day we first met in the basement under her mother's liquor store. She was this 5'2'' tall, good-looking blonde-- the only blonde in the group.  That's why I chose her.  Oh and her last name too: Skokowski, a Polish name. My mother knew I was gonna ask Nancy so she'd given me her engagement diamond ring a couple days earlier.  I froze it in an ice cube and served it with soda.  We sat in the kitchen together and I poured the soda for Nancy.  She just took the glass and drank.

"Did you notice there's anything different with your soda?" I asked. "No…" She looked down into the glass and widened her eyes.  She was speechless!  So I said, "Let me melt it."  I turned around and went to melt the ice in the kitchen sink.  I came back with the ring and, seeing Nancy anxiously waiting, I got down on one knee and said the magic words:"Will you marry me?"    And she said: "Yes I will!"
