The Spaces Between Your Fingers

This memory stood out as unique to Veronica, as it was a clear outline or the family dynamic between her and her siblings. Having six brothers and six sisters was tough, but she acted as a leader to a few of the younger ones. Her one younger sister, Rahnisha, constantly tormented her and her other siblings. This event in the winter led to Veronica getting stitches in her leg at the hospital, during which an older brother that she normally did not get along with read her a Dr. Seuss book to calm her down.

The cold glass that I lean against is the only thing standing between 6 of my younger siblings and I, and as they slide giddily down the church hill on trash-can lids, the snow beneath them gathers in airborne flurries. This is a typical winter here in North West Philadelphia, and watching my brothers and sisters frolic in the white landscape feels relaxing in a purely loving way. It's usually my job to act as the big sister too all my younger siblings, but I'm by far not the oldest child in my family. I’m only nine years old, but I feel much older when I act as their overseer, peering through the vestibule of our old, once affluent house.

As my mind becomes lost in the fluffy landscape before me, a loud crash comes from behind. A glass crash. Before I can react, a sharp pain shoots up my left leg. I turn and face my assailant, and much to no ones surprise, my younger sister Rahnisha stands, holding her mouth in a fit of giggles. As much as I’d like to berate her for her dastardly deeds, I catch a glimpse of my bloodied leg and promptly screech. The glass shard from the door behind me has made an awful, scarlet zig-zag on the back of my leg.
