The Spaces Between Your Fingers

This story is of my grandmother on her first date with my grandfather. I never had the opportunity to meet my grandfather because he died before I was born. I tried to ask my grandmother some of the best memories of the two of them to get some idea of what he was like and arrived at this one. The image is from their wedding day.

A cool summer night breeze blows into my windows as I change into my new dress.  It is a rich shade of midnight blue and is perfect for tonight's occasion.  After getting over their vehemence at the idea, my parents finally decided to let me see him, Bill.

I can reminisce of the first time I saw him. 6'2, blonde combed over hair, blue eyes, still in his army uniform, he was walking home from the store.  My girlfriend's and I all giggled through the window of the beauty shop as he passed. Who would've thought he'd actually ask me out?

My sense snaps back and I quickly make the final touches to my outfit and dash down the steps. I arrive into the living room but am deaf to the words being said because my eyes and ears are locked in on him.

Soon enough my mother sees my dreamy eyes, and instantly says, "Okay, you two have fun, be back by 11."  Bill nods his head so smoothly in a way that assured my mother and grandmother that I wouldn't be home a minute late.  We make our way down the street to the trolley line. Being in the service, Bill didn't have the need to own a car.  He was only home on furlough sparingly.

He turns to me, "Oh, Mary Jane, you are the most beautiful girl I've ever seen,".  Beet red I could do nothing but hold my mouth agape pleading with it to make words.  "I remember when I first saw you.  I spotted you out my front window, and you were out riding your bicycle back and forth down the street.  From that moment, I made sure that before I went back overseas, that I would have to take you out."  I could do nothing but feel the immense joy overtake my entire body.  This night could not get any better.

We finally get to Old City for the movie.  The movie is The Greatest Show on Earth starring James Stewart.  Definitely one I've been wanting to see for a while.  The movie ends and Bill turns to me and with a voice barely over a whisper, "You know you remind me of a movie star.  You're the spitting image of Elizabeth Taylor."

I grin and giggle, "Haha, yeah? I get that all the time."

"I don't doubt it."

What is with the man? Complement after complement.  What a handsome gentleman. He's the one that's from a movie.

We hop on in a cab and depart to the final stop of our journey, the pizza shop. Jukebox in the corner, red leather booths and stools, chrome fittings from top to bottom, filling the room with utter authenticity.  I order a large chocolate nut sundae that is big enough for the both of us.

Before I know it I'm back in front of my porch step and Bill is standing there in front of me.  I see him check his watch. 10:55, made it back with time to spare.

Was this the last time I was gonna see him?  When would he be back again? Did he think I was mature enough to be with him? Does this mean we'll start going steady now?

Next thing I feel is a quick kiss right on my lips.

"Maybe we can do this again sometime," and then he turns to go home.
