My best friend Elena got engaged on her birthday, in January of this year. Justin, her fiance also threw a surprise birthday party right before he proposed, making it another special occasion to celebrate in a company of best friends. Later that night, she asked me to be her Maid of Honor.

I get in the car and we start driving to the unknown place for a dinner, I guess. Not even sure actually. Justin never said anything, probably trying to surprise me and take me out to some nice place I haven’t been before. He plugs his phone to the AUX and turns on some music. I don’t mind, we always had similar taste in music. He looks a little strange though, just something about his behavior is different. And why doesn’t he even ask me how was my day as he always does, perhaps it is my birthday is he not interested? Nah he is just tired, I would be too if I worked amount of hours that he does.

“Babe, we are we going?” I decide to ask him to sort of break the ice and start talking about something.

“Be patient, you will see shortly” he answers.

“Is it a dinner at some fancy restaurant downtown? Or a concert?? Tell me tell me, I really want to know!!”

“Lena” he turns his head and looks at me and suddenly asks me a question:

“Where did you get this dress?”

“Bloomigdales, last weekend actually, why?” I reply almost immediately, “Do you not like it?”

“Of course I do, it’s pretty and unique just like you are. “

“Umm ok, thanks I guess….”

“But…” he interrupts me and continues, “Something is missing in your outfit!”

I give him a slightly dirty look.

“Really? What is it?”

Now I don’t just get upset and confused but also irritated. Is he going to tell me what and how to wear? And before I open my mouth to say something else, he pulls over and parks the car. He then hands me a small box wrapped with a light blue ribbon, tied in a bow.

"Here, this should complete your look." He slowly and carefully unwraps the box. I can see he is nervous, his hands are shaking too. He lowers the volume of music that is still playing in the background.

"Lena, since the time I asked you to be my girlfriend, you changed me. You made me believe in myself, you always support me, you are the kindest and most caring person I have ever met. You complete me. Now, allow me to ask you something…"

I think I know where he is going. Is he about to ask me to...?

"I would love to spend the rest of my life next to you, to love you, to protect you, to care for you and support you in everything that you do. Will you marry me?” And he opens the box and I see a ring.

This is an engagement ring and Justin is proposing. On my birthday!!? Is this real?

Not completely understanding of what is happening at the moment, I look at him but I don’t say anything. As couple seconds are passing by, I start to understand that this isn’t a dream, and Justin is in fact proposing to me and asking me to be his wife.

“Yes..”, I finally answer as tears start running down my face.

“Of course I will, you are mine forever”.
